ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The opera by Semyon Hulak-Artemovsky “Zaporozhets beyond the Danube” has withstood the test of time and entered the golden fund of the Ukrainian classical musical heritage. It premiered on April 14, 1863 at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, during the author’s benefit performance.
The performance was a great success. The reviewer Zagrebelny wrote in the Sovremennoye Slovo newspaper: “The Cossack beyond the Danube” is the first Ukrainian opera, this is a new manifestation of people’s self-consciousness. Words, and especially music, wonderfully express love for the Motherland, and especially the desire to return from a foreign country to Ukraine as soon as possible. According to contemporaries, the plot of the opera was suggested to Gulak-Artemovsky by the historian and writer Nikolai Kostomarov. The text of the libretto was written by the composer himself…
