ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Benjamin Appl sings on the Julier Pass in the middle of the snow. The baritone presents Franz Schubert’s “Winter Journey” at 2284 meters above sea level. The Origen Tower offers the ideal place for this. An unusual classical project in a BBC and SRF co-production.
The snow-covered Julier Pass is the scene of one of the most exciting television projects this winter. The German baritone Benjamin Appl sings songs from Franz Schubert’s “Winterreise”. Appl, winner of the BBC New Generation Artist and Echo Rising Star, is the current frontrunner of the new generation of lieder singers according to the British “Grammophone Magazine”. Appl inspires with his dark baritone and haunting stage presence. He will be accompanied by pianist James Baillieu.
Franz Schubert wrote Die Winterreise in the autumn of 1827, a year before his death. “I moved in as a stranger, I’ll move out as a stranger” is how the song cycle begins. It is the dark journey of a lost wanderer that musically reflects man’s existential pain.
