Winners
The artists, creatives and initiatives awarded in the sixth edition of the Ópera XXI, who will receive their award during a lyrical gala on October 22, 2024 at the Teatro de la Zarzuela, are:

– Award for Musical Direction: Josep Pons, for the direction of the opera «Parsifal», Wagner, at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in May 2023.

– Award for Stage Direction: Juan Echanove, for the stage direction of the zarzuela Pan y toros, Barbieri, a new production by the Teatro de la Zarzuela premiered in October 2022.

– Award for Best Singer (male category): baritone Juan Jesús Rodríguez, for his interpretation of the role of Count de Luna in the opera Il trovatore, Verdi, at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in October 2022 and at ABAO Bilbao Ópera in May 2023. 2023; for his Don Carlo from the opera Ernani, which was performed at the Oviedo Opera in February 2023, and for his interpretation of the role of Vidal Hernando in the zarzuela Luisa Fernanda, by Moreno Torroba, at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in June 2023.

– Award for Best Singer (female category): soprano Ángeles Blancas Gulín, for her interpretation of the role of Kostelnička in the opera Jenůfa, by Leoš Janáček, at the Teatro de la Maestranza in February 2023.

– Award for Best Young Singer: soprano Serena Sáenz, for her interpretation of the role of Lisa in La Sonnambula, Bellini, at the Teatro Real in Madrid and for her interpretation of the role of Norina in the opera Don Pasquale, by Donizetti, at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.

– Best Foreign Artist Award, for her special contribution to opera in Spain during the 2022-23 season: soprano Ermonela Jaho, for her interpretation of the title role in the opera Suor Angelica from Puccini’s Il Trittico, which was performed at the Gran Teatre Liceu in Barcelona in November 2022.

– Best Stage Design Award: Daniel Bianco, for his work as a set designer in the operetta El cantor de México, by Francis López, at Les Arts in Valencia in October 2022; the contemporary zarzuela Trato de favor, composed by Lucas Vidal, which premiered at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in May 2023, and Le nozze di Figaro, Mozart, which was seen at the Teatro de la Maestranza in December 2022.

– Award for Best Lighting Design: Eduardo Bravo, for his lighting design work on the operetta El cantor de México, by Francis López, at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia in October 2022 and on Le nozze di Figaro, by Mozart, which was seen at the Teatro de la Maestranza in December 2022.

– Award for Best Costume Design: costume designer Jesús Ruiz, for the costume design of the contemporary zarzuela Trato de favor; the zarzuela La Dolores, by Tomás Bretón, at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in January 2023; the opera La vida breve, by Falla, at the Teatro de la Maestranza in March 2023; the opera Carmen, by Bizet, at the Teatro Villamarta in Jerez in June 2023, and the opera Doña Francisquita, by Vives, at the Teatro Villamarta in Jerez in January 2023.

– Award for the Best Video Creation Proposal: Franc Aleu, for his work on the opera Tristan und Isolde, by Wagner, in April 2023 at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia.

Award-winning productions
– Award for the Best New Contemporary Lyrical Creation Proposal: the chamber opera Orgia, by the composer Hèctor Parra and libretto by Calixto Bieito, premiered at the Teatro Arriaga in Bilbao in June 2023, in co-production with the Perelada Festival and the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.

– Award for the New Opera Production: the opera La nariz, by Dmitri Shostakovich, premiered in Spain at the Teatro Real in March 2023 (in co-production with the Royal Opera House, the Komische Oper Berlin and Opera Australia), with stage direction by Barrie Kosky.

– Award for the Best Initiative or Project that contributes to the dissemination of operatic activity: the opera La gata perduda, co-created by the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Barcelona neighbourhood of Raval.

– Spanish opera heritage award for the best initiative, performer, direction or production of Spanish opera repertoire: the recovery of the zarzuela San Franco de Sena (originally premiered in 1883 at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid), by Emilio Arrieta.

– OLA Award for the best new Latin American opera production: Il Guarany, Teatro Municipal de São Paulo, premiered in May 2023 revived by the Teatro Municipal de São Paulo in a production with stage direction by Cibele Forjaz and musical by Roberto Minczuk.
