ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Not much mentioned anywhere, this 15-year-old ending to “Turandot” was composed by Somtow Sucharitkul for a Thailand production in 2004. Of the ending, Somtow says “In those days the orchestra couldn’t play that well yet, and there are other performance issues but having now experienced many different approaches to the ending, I suspect that with a serious rewrite a Somtow ending might have something to say.”
“My main emphasis in doing this ending was to give Turandot the time needed for a transformation into a sympathetic character, for her almost to merge with the spirit of the departed Liù. Also, to try to interpret what Puccini might have meant when he wrote the word ‘Tristan’ into his notes. Since doing this I’ve become a lot better at what I do so I consider this just a ‘draft’. I’ve also seen more of Puccini’s sketches than I had at the time.”
Somtow says “I hope to do another ending soon — with all I have learned since the first attempt. Perhaps as part of our complete Puccini series in progress right now.”
