ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Pagano’s reading aims to highlight the values of redemption symbolically represented by the Risorgimento and the heroic duo Tosca-Caravadossi and gives significance to Puccini’s immortal work.
«Buchenwald is the only extermination camp where in April 1945 – underlines the director – the prisoners rebelled and took control before the arrival of the allies». Pagano’s staging proposes that the performance of Tosca takes place – precisely – in Buchenwald in March 1945 on the orders of an SS officer in love with Puccini’s opera and who discovers that there are some singers from a Bulgarian company in the camp. «It is precisely the story of Caravadossi, killed on the scene by shots from Luger, as well as Tosca herself, mowed down by a burst of machine gun fire, that lights the spark of rebellion», says Pagano.
