The Stuttgart State Theater is the largest three-part theater in the world and employs around 1,400 people. Four young ensemble members from opera, ballet and theater take you behind the scenes and to places that viewers rarely see. “Toi Toi Toi! The largest three-part theater in the world” tells a story in five episodes about people from Stuttgart who produce unique art.

The faces in front of and behind the curtain

In “Toi Toi Toi! The largest three-part theater in the world”, four young ensemble members, ballerina Rocio Aleman, actor Elias Krischke and the singing couple Esther Dierkes and Björn Bürger lead the TV audience behind the scenes of the house that means their lives.

The documentary follows the Stuttgart Ballet on a guest performance in Bangkok, showing the work of the stage managers, prop masters and tailors behind the scenes, who give their best every day and are never in the spotlight. The camera is close to the stars seconds before the premiere, watching as tailors transform the exceptional dancer Friedemann Vogel into a nutcracker.

Creative minds behind the documentary

The five-part documentary was produced by the filmmakers Sandra Maria Dujmovic and Joachim Lang for SWR. Their names stand for arthouse films such as “Mack the Knife – Brecht’s Threepenny Film”, “Führer und Verführer”, which won the Audience Award 2024 at the Munich Film Festival, and “Cranko” with Sam Riley and the stars of the Stuttgart Ballet (theatrical release: October 3, 2024).
