Galon says he began working with opera two years ago and Oscar Wilde’s text always disturbed him for several reasons, making him reflect on the very nature of art, which led to the adaptation for opera. “The short story The Young King tells the story of a young man who, raised in a humble environment, is unexpectedly elevated to the position of king and experiences difficulties with the strict rules of the court.”
The composer professor, who also acts as conductor of the USP Philharmonic in this opera project, highlights the various dramatic possibilities of the text, which, although it is “a tale of emancipation, with childish elements”, contains “symbolic meanings and complexities that could help in terms of making interesting music and transforming it into an opera”. The libretto, the opera’s plot, was written with the collaboration of Paulo Eduardo de Barros Veiga, a postdoctoral fellow at FFCLRP, who is also a member of the Poíesis Crítica research group , led by Ricciardi.
