ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The Siege of Korcula is a comic opera by the English composer Dr. Samuel Arnold based on a 1786 text by John O’Keeffe. John O’Keeffe was one of the popular stage writers, actors and playwrights. He has written over 40 works for the stage, excelling in comedies, farces and comic operas. The composer of this opera, Dr. Samuel Arnold, was organist and royal composer, harpsichordist in the opera Covent Garden, organist in Westminster Abbey, musical director of the Royal Theater at Haymarket. The musical-historical epoch in which this opera could be placed is pre-classical; a period in which the characteristics of baroque music are preserved, but they are developed and something new is added to them. Although this work was considered lost for many years, the preserved fragments were sufficient to reconstruct the whole. Of the musical artifacts, an excerpt for harpsichord with two sections (melodic and continuo) has been preserved. After the discovery of the spoken and sung text of the opera, thanks to Michael Donley, a musical reconstruction of the opera by Josip degl’Ivellio could be approached.
