Summary
The opera is based on Chaucer’s Pardoner’s Tale from the Canterbury Tales. Three thieves have just killed a stranger for his gold. The body is now lying around the area. The young newcomer is seized with remorse, but the leader and his companion threaten him. He walks away and they divide the gold – into two piles! When he brings them wine, they stab him. But the newcomer had already made his own plans: the wine was poisoned, and so the murderers themselves will be murdered.
