ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
What is memory but “another truth in a vast network of truths” (Arthur Sze)?
In the kind of event you’ll only find at 92NY, Tisch Music and the Unterberg Poetry Center present a bold new work from acclaimed experimental ensemble AMOC* (American Modern Opera Company) blending music, poetry, natural sounds, imagery, and more. the echoing of tenses, presented here in its New York premiere following a 2022 performance at the Ojai Festival, explores themes of shared memory, the Asian-American immigrant experience, the universal immigrant experience, and familial relationships, in an evocative and wholly original interdisciplinary work.
At its center are poems by seven of today’s most compelling Asian-American poets: Victoria Chang, Arthur Sze, Jenny Xie, Monica Youn, Ocean Vuong, Cathy Park Hong, and Li-Young Lee, four of whom read their poems in the performance. The work is composed by Anthony Cheung, and features violinist Miranda Cuckson; additional poems are set to music and sung by tenor Paul Appleby.
A relevant and timely work that is both dreamlike and provocative, the echoing of senses is a production not to be missed.
