ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

Claudio Monteverdi’s work embodies the most extraordinary laboratory of emotions in music in all of history. He invented new parameters that provoked emotion and anger in his contemporaries. 2017 will be an anniversary year, which will allow us to explore his work and highlight the contemporary strength of his musical language. Cappella Mediterranea proposes to explore with the public, how could be shared in the soul of the same man: the amorous torments of the madrigals, the purest nobility of the subject of Orfeo, the novelties of a Vespro, the conservatism and faith of his a cappella masses and his “moral” madrigals, the spirit of adventure and chastity which are the driving force of Ulysses and finally the creation of one of the most amoral pieces in the history of music, L’Incoronazione di Poppea. To understand this juxtaposition of ideas and passions, we have imagined a program driven by allegorical forces very present in the minds and imaginations of Italian men in the 17th century: the seven deadly sins and the seven virtues. The deadly sins of the Catholic religion, cited by Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) and listed by Pope Gregory (540-604), were part of the imagination of artists throughout the centuries, including Dante and Leonardo Da Vinci. Thus, a small theater of human emotions, this program leads the listener towards a deep reflection on the nature of emotions and suggests that Monteverdi is perhaps one of the only artists in history to have known the origin of human passions in order to transcend and sublimate them in music
