ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Scene: Hollywood, 1935 – Adele, an ingenue wannabe, serves as maid to film stars Rosie and Gabe Valentine. When Adele receives a mysterious invitation to “the Party of the Century” she begs to get the night off. However, because Gabe has gotten himself into some legal troubles he is supposed to report to jail, leaving Rosie in charge of all production concerns of their latest film. In walks their best friend and agent, Freddie who secretly invites both Gabe and Rosie to the “Party of the Century” without the other knowing. He is clearly up to something.
After Gabe leaves with Freddie, Rosie’s former lover, opera singer Alfredo Caruso, appears hoping to reignite their passion. While Rosie is fervently avoiding Alfredo’s advances, Police Chief Frank comes to escort Gabe to jail. Frank mistakes Alfredo for Rosie’s husband, conveniently dispensing with the unwanted lover. Rosie gives Adele the night off, and with that, they are all are free have some fun.
The big party is at the home of Prince Orlofsky, a Russian millionaire dabbling in the film industry. All the guests are in disguise as they help themselves to the abundant champagne and festivities. Gabe recognizes Adele and accuses her of party crashing, but in her famous “Laughing Song,” she shames him into silence and convinces the guests that she is an actress. Gabe turns his amorous sights on a mysterious Hungarian Countess, failing to recognize her as his own wife.
How will the night of dancing, flirting, and new liaisons unfold? What is the point of Freddie’s elaborate charade? Will Alfredo serve Gabe’s sentence in jail?
