ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
For almost fifteen hundred years the Empress Theodora has fixed with her severe gaze the faithful and visitors of the Basilica of San Vitale: the purple cloak with the Three Kings, the golden chalice studded with gems. Now finally the Basilissa leaves the mosaics of the church and takes shape, body, life. She is, in fact, “venerated as a saint and cursed as a devil” – says the German writer Frank Thiess – the protagonist of Theodora. A climb to heaven in five movements, the new chamber opera by Mauro Montalbetti, with a libretto by Barbara Roganti, which will see the light right under the golden vaults of the basilica where the mosaic of her imperial procession shines. Not the mere story of her existence – the authors maintain – but rather a path that seeks, through music, to enter her labyrinth
