ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Olli Kortekangas (b. 1955) is one of the most performed and prolific Finnish composers. Kortekangas, one of the founders of the Korvat auki association, which has now grown to mythical proportions and defined the contemporary music field in the 1970s and 1980s, is known especially for his vocal music for choirs, solo singers and large stages. His best-known operas are Veljeni vartija (2018) and Isän tytto , which was awarded the Teosto prize in 2007.
In Kortekanka’s extensive vocal music production, Songs of Meena (2020) is his second orchestral vocal series. The piece was created specifically for Tuuli Takala, her lyrical soprano, her personality and her stage charisma. The texts have been selected from the production of Meena Alexander (1951–2018), an Indian-born, later Americanized poet. Kortekangas got to know him ten years ago when he was looking for inspiration for his piece Migrations for mezzo-soprano, male choir and orchestra about migration.
