ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

THREE OLD FRIENDS REMEMBER 1968 AND ALMOST GET IT RIGHT.
In this ambitious, two-part production, the musical highlights from Giuseppe Verdi’s sixteen earliest operas are brought together to tell a new story. In it we meet three friends during two key periods in their lives: the turbulent protest years from May 1968 and a reunion forty years later. Played apart by time but united by their shared past, they take stock of what remains of the unrest, violence and idealism of their youth, and try to uncover the truth behind an unsolved mystery. This unravels in the course of two separate opera performances, Rivoluzione and Nostalgia, full of compelling arias, emblematic but rarely performed overtures, and powerful choral parts such as “Va, pensiero” ( Nabucco ) or “Patria oppressa!” ( Macbeth ).

Rivoluzione :
Late 1960s. A growing wave of social unrest sweeps across Europe. Three friends, Carlo, Lorenzo and Giuseppe, become involved in the protest movement. All three have a bond with the young violinist and activist Laura. As the revolution gradually turns into a physical confrontation with the authorities, the personal and emotional conflicts between the members of the group also grow and Laura’s ideals of peaceful resistance are overtaken by reality. How far is she willing to go for her beliefs?

Nostalgia :
Late 2000s. A vernissage takes place in a luxurious art gallery. The select group includes Carlo, Giuseppe and Lorenzo, who meet again for the first time in many years. Part of the installation on display is a documentary with images of the revolutionary youth of the three friends. Each of them seems to remember that time differently, but they all share one feeling: the shadow of Laura, who disappeared without a trace forty years earlier, still hangs over them…
