ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

Jeonju City presents a unique opera performance to provide cultural enjoyment to its citizens.

Verdi’s ‘Rigoletto’ will be presented as a Korean opera ‘Rigoletto from Joseon’ that melts Korean history and sentiment. The opera’s historical background was adapted to the late Joseon Dynasty, and the characters were changed to Kokdu (Rigoletto), Bun-i (Gilda), Byeon-sa-to (Duke of Mantua), Salsu (Sparafucile), Salsu-nui (Magdalena), and Park Su-mudang (Count Monterone).

The idea is brilliant. I focused on the situation of the time in 1851 when ‘Rigoletto’ was first performed. At the time of the original first performance, the corruption of the ruling class was rampant in Joseon due to the politics of factions. I naturally incorporated the situation of the late Joseon period to satirize the class society and planned it so that the audience could easily understand the original content.

They used an original script translated into Korean and utilized new elements of adaptation, such as having a singer play the role of the shaman who casts the ‘father’s curse.’

Additionally, the ensemble is composed of a mixture of Western and traditional instruments, and the point of interest is that the concept has been changed to that of court musicians, so that the ensemble acts as a part of the characters rather than simply playing the accompaniment.
