ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

Berny Siles Loaiza. Born in San José in 1974, but a Paraísean by blood and heart; Berny Siles Loaiza has had musical influences thanks to his father Carlos Siles, also a musician, who motivated him at the age of 12 to join the Orosí band to begin his studies in euphonium.

After entering the Liceo de Paraíso as a student, he continued his musical studies under the guidance of the already well-known musician Mauricio Solano, who in 1989 managed to obtain land from the municipality of Paraíso to start what was then known as La Casa de la Música, today known as the Municipal School of Music of Paraíso, of which composer Berny Siles is now the institutional director.
He then began piano studies. Transcribing sheet music became a growing interest as he continued to do so. Having to use specific knowledge combined with intuition to decipher more than a few vague beats was what sparked Berny’s attraction to the art of composition.
Indeed, this passion for composing led him to study musical composition at the University of Costa Rica. Siles requested to begin studies with the composer who had recently arrived on Costa Rican soil, Eddie Mora, from whom he acquired a deep-rooted contemporary influence.
After finishing high school and later starting his degree, Berny needed to focus on his work as a graduation thesis and after many options he decided to focus on a large work that included a choir. Without much clarity about the work he wanted to do, the artist was attracted by the music of the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, who was his main influence when composing a requiem.
After a trip to Europe, on November 17, 2005, the work REQVIEM: Misa pro difunctis was premiered, thus marking the beginning of a fruitful musical career that would accredit him as the first Costa Rican composer to create a requiem and to have won the Aquileo J. Echeverría Prize in April 2006 for said work.
His close relationship with the musical formation of Paraíso gave him a position as a violin and viola teacher, as well as choir director at the Municipal Music School of Paraíso. Later, he acquired the position of director, which he still holds today and which has allowed him to carry out cultural expansion and social action programs for children and young people in the communities of the canton of Paraíso through music.
This story was compiled by María José Cordero Quesada. The information was obtained through a personal interview with the composer Berny Siles.
