A melting pot and immensely fertile ground for a multitude of composers who knew and influenced each other and who (together with representatives of other art forms) formed โViennese Modernismโ. Among them were a number of composers who are little known today, such as Hans Rott, who died young and had a great influence on Mahler, but also Mahlerโs temporary flatmate, Rudolf Krzyzanowski, who later became a successful conductor. Next to Alma Mahler, who, in addition to her great inspiring effect on other people as a composer, herself created excellent songs in a very personal tonal language. Furthermore, Karl Weigl, brought to the Court Opera by Gustav Mahler in 1904, was a highly respected composer until the seizure of power in 1933, whose works were performed by the greatest interpreters of his time.
