Rameau Selection of arias from, among others, Les Boréades, Platée and Les Indes Galantes

Rameau is considered the greatest French composer of the Baroque period. He is known for his powerful creativity and profound innovation in music. However, we know little about his early years. It was not until the 1720s that he gained recognition as an important music theorist with his Treatise on Harmony (1722). In the following years he composed masterpieces for the harpsichord, which were distributed throughout Europe.
It was not until he was almost 50 that Rameau began his career as an opera composer, which now largely determines his reputation. For the 2023-2024 season of the Sweelinck Baroque Orchestra, I compiled an overview of his greatest operas. Rameau’s freshness and originality are reflected in his arias, recitatives and dances, combining perfect composition and dramaturgy.
