Two short operas from the late 20th century take a new look at supposedly familiar themes.
At the heart of Péter Eötvös’ chamber opera “Radames”, which premiered in 1975, is an opera rehearsal of “Aida” with a troupe that was hit particularly hard by the austerity hammer: the funding was only sufficient for three orchestra musicians, the conductor conducting from the electric piano and the countertenor of the ensemble must sing the roles of both Aida and Radames. So it comes to the misfortune of the three (!) directors present and to the great entertainment of the audience, all sorts of mishaps – only rarely do you get such unfiltered insights into a rehearsal operation on stage.
Salvatore Sciarrino’s Lohengrin premiered in Milan in 1982 as Azione invisibile per solista, strumenti e voci. The stage action is loosely based on the legend of “Lohengrin” as set to music by Richard Wagner. For the dramaturgy of his opera, however, the composer chose the unusual perspective of Elsa, the unjustly accused virgin.
