The Bible is a frequent source for opera librettos.
Both the Old Testament and the New Testament provided many plots for operas.
Starting with baroque Opera such as David et Jonathas by Marc-Antoine Charpentier.
Rossini loved Bible stories: Mosé in Egitto, Ciro in Babilonia
Verdi had his first major success with Nabucco.
Richard Strauss wrote Salome
and in 1955 Carlisle Floyd premiered Susannah,
One of the latest Bible operas is Tobias and the Angel by Jonathan Dove (1999).
