Rasmus Puur (actually Mart-Rasmus Puur ; born on March 23, 1991 ) is an Estonian composer , conductor and cultural organizer ; From 2021, cultural adviser to the President of Estonia.
He is the youngest Estonian composer whose opera has entered the professional theater repertoire.
Opera “Colors of the Clouds”
2017 . In 2010, his debut opera ” Colours of Clouds ” ( based on Jaan Kruusvall’s play of the same name, librettist Laur Lomper , directed by Roman Baskin ) was staged at the Estonian National Opera . The work was completed for the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia (Puur won the opera creation competition organized by the Estonian National Opera in 2014 ) and its world premiere took place on September 22, 2017 in the Estonian National Opera’s theater hall. The main actors were Jassi Zakharov , Helen Lokuta , Mati Turi , Juuli Lill , Janne Shevchenko and Ita Ever . Conducted by Kaspar Mänd . Rasmus Puuris thus became the youngest Estonian composer whose opera has reached the professional theater stage. The work was in the Estonian repertoire until February 2020, on February 23, 2020, the recorded opera performance was shown for the first time on the main TV channel of Estonian Television.
The idea of the opera is based on Jaan Kruusvall’s play “Clouds in Clouds” (1983), which deals with the flight of Estonians from their homeland in the wake of the events of the Second World War . However, time is not decisive when it comes to leaving Estonia – I went during the war, I fled from the Soviet occupation, and I go abroad for a long time or even now, in the days of freedom.
Music critic Maria Mölder has highlighted how interesting Rasmus Puur has interwoven the past and the present in the opera: “Puur’s melodic music captures the soul and conveys well the mood of the scene and the inner life of the characters. Rasmus Puur was 24 years old when he started writing the opera “Colours of the Clouds” and 26 years old at the time of the opera’s premiere.
