ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

In the second half of the 19th century, this play created a real sensation in Galicia: it was staged 70 times during Verbytskyi’s lifetime alone, and in 1918, its 500th (!) performance took place in Kyiv. In 1865, at a competition organized by the Theater Committee of the “Ruska besida” society in Lviv, the authors of “Pidhiryan” were deservedly awarded the first prize. In addition, the play was performed in Warsaw and St. Petersburg, and some information indicates that the play was translated into Czech specifically for the performance at the Prague National Theater. Theater critics of the time attributed the entire success of the play to the music of Father Mykhailo Verbytskyi. That is why today the mission of reviving its sound has become so important for the performers and organizers of the project. The music for “Pydhiryan” appeared in a new orchestration by the Kharkiv composer Volodymyr Bogatyryov and in a reading by the well-known musical pioneer, the Lviv conductor Ivan Ostapovich. The event as part of the series of Historical Concerts is designed to acquaint the modern public not only with the musical world of Galicia in the 19th century, but also with the historical context of that era, the unique color, way of life, and the special language used in the past.
