“English Orpheus”. This was the epithet received by John Dowland as well as Henry Purcell and Georg Friedrich Handel. The former was considered the epitome of the lute song of the Elizabethan era. This genre reached a new splendor with Henry Purcell who, from 1690, explored new accompaniments in ground bass and bass ostinato. Georg Friedrich Handel brought the spirit of Italian opera and cantata to London.
