ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
In a Serbian village under Turkish rule, love is born between Radet and Stanka. Stanka comes to the well to get water, expecting Radet. He soon arrives and the two talk about their love and longing. Radet’s mother Anđa comes by and blesses them and approves the wedding. She paused in the meadow, picking flowers, excited about the upcoming wedding. Village aga Redžep is hopelessly in love with Stanka and intends to thwart her marriage with Radeta. He comes across and swears to Stanka that she must respond to his love and go for him. She tells him that she loves Radet, he threatens her, and she breaks away and runs away. The next morning, the whole village gathered in joy in honor of the wedding of the young people, Redžep suddenly appears and says in great anger that Rade is “the son of sin, the son of the whole village”. Nobody believes that. Mother Anđa appears and, to everyone’s astonishment, admits that they are working with an illegitimate child, but not a child of sin but of love. In anger and despair, Rade pulls a gun on her mother, she is overcome with pain, and Redžep’s men forcefully take Stanka away.
