The opera “Music and the Brain” addresses the neurological and emotional effects that music can have on us. Inspired by the writings of neurologist Oliver Sacks, it tells the story of the singer, whose successful career was cut short by an accident. The resulting brain damage has caused her to lose the ability to understand music and perform. She is then treated by the doctor, who, in addition to being a fan of the singer, hopes that his research into this rare and interesting case will redeem him in the eyes of the academic world. As they both struggle to understand the singer’s condition, questions arise about the nature of music. What is music? Is it neurological? Or emotionally? What happens in the musical brain when things fall apart? But the doctor’s time is running out as his big presentation of the work is coming up and he must now present his discoveries no matter what
