ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
MOZART Don Giovanni Overture
BOLOGNE Aria from L’Amant anonyme
MOZART Exsultate, Jubilate
BOLOGNE Violin Concerto
MOZART Symphony no. 35, “Haffner”
Two geniuses: one called Mozart, the son of a musician; the other called Joseph Bologne Chevalier de Saint-Georges, the son of an African slave and her white master. In the 18th century, both were revered. Bologne became a beloved violin soloist, composer, champion fencing master, and hero of the French Revolution. Hearing both composers side by side in glorious music, we ask why one was forgotten…?
Bologne’s opera, L’Amant Anonyme (The Anonymous Lover) deals with issues of class struggle in 18th-century France. In this aria, the heroine (a woman of the aristocracy) is in great distress because she does not dare to confess her love for a man who has been her dear friend for years, but is not of noble birth. She does not know that this man is actually in love with her as well – and he does not dare to tell her either.
