Act One
The narrator introduces the Mouse Opera Country. A little mouse is born to mother Kunigunda and father Siegfried, and the parents want to name it after grandfather Janez. The entire mouse opera community vehemently opposes this and the mouse is given the operatic name Romeo. His parents sing him a lullaby. Romeo grows up day by day into a happy, sparkling, and above all curious mouse. The opera completely takes him over, he would like to know every corner of this mysterious house. He sees the conductor for the first time and inadvertently frightens the prima donna, for which Father Siegfried punishes him painfully. Romeo does not understand punishment at all, but at the same time he feels an irresistible desire to explore. With the mouse Juliet, Romeo gets a companion for his further operatic adventures.
Act Two
Orchestra Cave. The two musicians comment on the conductor’s behavior. When the conductor sees Romeo the mouse, he runs away from the orchestra pit in terror, and Romeo is punished again for his inappropriate act. He is weighed down by a doubt: should he listen to others or his heart? In the end, he and Julia decide to follow their dreams. The famous balcony scene features a prima donna in the role of Juliet and an opera singer in the role of Romeo. The mouse accidentally scares the singer. They enjoy every moment and nothing in their way can stop them. Meanwhile, the mouse opera community gathers for a crisis meeting. People started to set up chapels around the opera house.
Act Three
Romeo the mouse and Juliet the mouse realize that they do not belong in this environment. Disappointed, they take refuge in the opera house, where a scarecrow appears to them, who is actually Grandpa John, and comforts them. He agrees that everyone in the opera, opera mice and humans, is way too serious. He tells them that the opera mice are actually ordinary field mice and shows them the exit from the opera house. It’s a different world out there. A world of real colors and not painted backdrops. Romeo and Juliet go towards the sun into a new world.
