ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
In a small town, somewhere in Europe, somewhere on the periphery. Time seems to have stood still, everyday life has become unpredictable, and the future offers little hope. It is a world that seems to be on the verge of the apocalypse. Dark shadows of an intangible threat have fallen over the town and its inhabitants. But some of them are trying to leave reality behind: a music professor with his sense for pure, unadulterated tones, a strange young man with his interest in the vastness and magic of the cosmos, women torn between states of anxiety and the instinct for power. And then the arrival of a mysterious circus with bizarre characters and strange attractions causes new upheavals…
The libretto, which Guillaume Métayer developed together with director David Marton, is based on the 1989 novel of the same name by the Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai, who has evocatively captured the peculiar apocalyptic mood in words and in a great narrative flow. The attitude to life of our time comes to the fore, brought to life by thoroughly contemporary music by the French composer Marc-André Dalbavie, who is known for an aesthetic of sensitive sound sensuality. On the basis of text and composition, David Marton develops a “cinematic opera” in which traditions and techniques of musical theater meet elements of film. A special cinematographic view of the art form of opera will open up new perspectives and dimensions.
