ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

Manon Lescaut is a comic opera in three acts composed by Daniel Auber on a libretto by Eugène Scribe , and, like Puccini ‘s Manon Lescaut and Massenet ‘s Manon , taken from the novel Manon Lescaut (1731) by Abbé Prévost .

This comic opera was created on February 23, 1856at the Théâtre National de l’Opéra-Comique Opéra-Comique in the second Salle Favart, in Paris. It is the first lyrical work staged by the troupe of the Opéra-Comique not to benefit from a happy ending 1 . It was staged in Liège in 1875, revived at the Opéra-Comique in 1882 2 , and regularly performed in Germany as well as in France. However, since the end of the 19th century , its performances have become very rare.

In 1990 it was revived at the Opéra Comique in Paris by the Picardy Sinfonietta of Amiens under the direction of Patrick Fournillier. The live recording of this opera is distributed by the French label Le Chant du Monde. Another performance took place at the Wexford Festival in October-November 2002.

In North America , it was staged in 2006 by the Lyric Opera of Los Angeles at the Los Angeles Theatre.

It was remounted in Liège in 2016, with Sumi Jo .

The plot of this comic opera bears little resemblance to the novel by Abbé Prévost (Lescaut is in fact Manon’s brother and not her cousin). One character – the Marquis d’Hérigny – represents Manon’s many wealthy suitors in the novel. Other characters from the novel are completely absent from the opera, others have on the contrary been added to the libretto.
