A double bill of Puccini’s miracles and Ravel’s fantasy of mother-child love.
As the third installment of the double bill series, Puccini’s “Angelica the Nun” and Ravel’s “Children and Magic” will be performed together. “Angelica the Nun” is the second work in Puccini’s “trilogy” in his later years, and with the exception of the mixed chorus in the final scene, all the characters are played only by female voices, and the work is filled with a religious and lyrical atmosphere. . In about 50 minutes, the calm scene of the nuns, the tense exchange between Angelica and her aunt the Duchess, the dramatic development of grief, and the mysterious miracle scene are all captured in Puccini’s unique eloquence. It unfolds with orchestral music. Ravel’s “Children and Magic” is a work that the composer himself called “fantasy lyrics,” which combines elements of opera and ballet. It is a stage production that can be enjoyed not only by children but also as a fable for adults, as it is told from a child’s perspective. Ravel’s unique modern harmonies and rhythms and gorgeous orchestral music are also attractive.
Jun Awakuni, Japan’s most talented opera director, will be directing the production, and Ryunori Numajiri, who is also good at modern works, will be conducting the production, following on from “Tragedy of Florence/Gianni Schicchi”. I’m looking forward to the contrast unique to the double bill. Angelica will be played by Chiara Izzotton, who rose to stardom with dramatic roles such as Tosca, and this will be her first appearance since Tosca in 2021. “Children and Magic” Chloe Bourriot, who is particularly good at playing children, will appear in the role.
