ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Full program and infos
The first part of the concert series “Song of America: A Celebration of Black Music” focuses on the moving texts of the Afro-American poet Langston Hughes, set to music by composers from Europe and America.
“I am America too”. With these powerful words, the African-American poet Langston Hughes formulated in 1925 the legitimate claim of the “People of Color” to be an equal and equal part of American culture and society. As part of the “Harlem Renaissance,” a dynamic movement of African American artists in the 1920s, Hughes became a classic. With his deeply humanistic attitude, spirit, humor and incorruptible integrity, he created works that are timeless and touching to this day. The program “Langston Hughes: Singing Harlem in Europe” brings together settings of his texts by composers such as Wilhelm Grosz, Florence Price and Leonard Bernstein – they show that humanity and truthfulness know no bounds then as now.
