ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Lando Bartolini ( Prato , 11 April 1937 – 28 June 2024 ) was an Italian tenor.
Lando Bartolini was born in Prato into a family of five brothers and sisters. Son of a tailor and barber, his brother Lino was also a singer, reaching the final of the 1962 Sanremo Festival under the pseudonym Rocco Montana . He studied the accordion as a young man and worked in the family textile business. Married in 1966 , he later moved to the United States to Philadelphia , working in mechanics. When his brother Lino died in a car accident, in 1967 he began attending the Music School of Philadelphia , with the aim of becoming an opera singer.
After only one year he won the Mario Lanza competition , demonstrating, even after a short period of study, that he had an innate vocal technique and was admitted to the prestigious Academy of Vocal Arts ; the teaching of Nicola Moscona , a well-known bass at the Metropolitan Theatre in New York, proved to be particularly important .
His opera debut occurred on October 17, 1968 at the St. Joseph Theater in Philadelphia as the protagonist of Il tabarro . In 1973 she was the protagonist in Pietro Mascagni ‘s Iris at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona . Her career soon developed on all the most prestigious stages in the world. He got his first real contract at the St. Gallen theater in Switzerland , playing Attila and Gianni Schicchi in German and then La bohème in Italian . Then it was the turn of the New York City Opera , where he remained for three years, making his debut with Cavalleria rusticana and following with La bohème , Madama Butterfly , La traviata , Rigoletto , Tosca . Another important role was that of Radames , in which he debuted on 13 October 1979 in Monterrey .
The debut in Italy took place on 30 December 1982 at the Teatro alla Scala in Ernani , directed by Luca Ronconi . In May 1983 he made his debut at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires in Il tabarro and in July of the same year at the Arena di Verona in Aida . Other important debuts followed: in 1986 at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples in Andrea Chénier and in Tokyo with the Vienna Opera orchestra in Manon Lescaut , directed by Giuseppe Sinopoli . In February 1987 at the San Carlos Theater in Lisbon with Turandot , in March at the Paris Opéra in Don Carlo , in December 1988 at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in Aida and in July 1989 in Caracas with Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci . The local newspaper “El Universal” expressed it thus: ” …But the greatest emotions came from the interpretations of Turiddu and Canio by the tenor Lando Bartolini. The voice recalls the best of Del Monaco , but without his excesses. He sings with exciting virility, volume, range and timbre .”
In 1990 he made his debut in various theatres, especially in Italy: in February at the Teatro Bellini in Catania with Il trovatore , in March at the Teatro Regio in Parma in Ernani , in July at the Teatro Regio in Turin with Aida . In 1991 he made his debut in his native Tuscany at the Teatro Comunale in Florence in Cavalleria rusticana , in 1992 in San Francisco in La forza del destino . In February 1993 he was at the Washington Opera in Turandot and in April at the Rome Opera in Il trovatore . In 1994 he sang in Sydney in Turandot . In January 1995 , again with Turandot , he was at the Metropolitan Opera and returned to the Arena di Verona, reviewed as follows by the newspaper “L’Arena”: ” Lando Bartolini’s performance was outstanding, a Calaf full of fresh energy but without the useless exhibitionism of which the unknown prince is sometimes a victim. In excellent vocal form, the tenor achieved full personal success with his “Nessun dorma”, highly acclaimed by the public .”
In 1996 he made his debut in Othello in Alexandria, Egypt directed by Giancarlo Del Monaco ( Mario ‘s son ). Of particular importance was Turandot at the Comunale in Florence in 1997 , preceded by great international interest, also due to the debut in an opera direction by Zhang Yimou and the orchestral direction of Zubin Mehta : this production was then triumphantly replicated in 1998 in Beijing in the Forbidden City . In June 2001 another debut at the Warsaw theatre , again with Otello . In December 2002 he sang in Tokyo in Il Trovatore and in 2003 in Athens as Calaf .
On November 25, 2003, at the Lincoln Center in New York, he took part in the American premiere of Guglielmo Ratcliff as the protagonist . On November 20, 2004, he made his debut in Turin in La cena delle beffe ; F. Corsaro wrote in La Stampa : ” Among the protagonists, the tenor Lando Bartolini stood out, a veteran of the difficult role of Calaf, which qualifies him as unsurpassed in terms of the number of performances. In this opera, in the role of Giannetto, he soared with penetrating blasts in the high tessitura of the first act, then mastering the aria “Non è ancora la vita un gioco di morte?” and was applauded even more for the very well-tuned final high note “.
He particularly distinguished himself in Aida , which he performed in more than 240 performances; followed by Turandot with 179 and Il Trovatore with 160, as well as titles in particular by Verdi and Puccini , for a total of 49 roles.
