ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The literary source, based on which the libretto was written by none other than Roland Schimmelpfennig, tells the story of two comrades Karl and Richard, who are prisoners of war in the Siberian steppe. Richard tells the unmarried Karl in such detail about his wife Anna that he falls in love with a dream image of this woman. One day Karl manages to escape. Back home, he introduces himself as Richard to Anna, who had believed her husband to be dead. Anna is doubtful, but the stranger knows so much about her that she gets involved with the strange Mr. Richard and soon becomes pregnant. When the real Richard returns, Anna’s love for Karl has long been solidified. Unable to take revenge, Richard collapses. But Karl and Anna leave the city, “separated only by death”.
