” Júlia, A Weaver “, by Kettle himself, which tells the story of Júlia Santiago , the first woman to become a councilor in Recife. It will be the second production of the play, after its premiere in 2017.
It is a small lyrical work, narrating important episodes in the character’s life: her arrival in the capital of Pernambuco, her work in factories and textile mills, her leadership role in the Círculo Operário, reaching her socio-political engagement and her election as a councilor.
“I based it on the interview that Júlia gave to Cehibra da Fundaj, so that the texts of the scenes that make up the work were taken, as faithfully as possible, from her speeches”, concludes maestro and composer Kettle.
From cheesy to opera
This time, Júlia Santiago is played by singer Karla Karolla , who has been building a career on brega, a popular rhythm that is one of the most listened to in Pernambuco. The lineup may sound unusual, but Karolla’s background is in lyrical singing, being classified as a Lyric Soprano.
