Ilona Tokody ( Szeged , April 27 , 1953 –) Kossuth and Ferenc Liszt Prize-winning Hungarian opera singer ( soprano )

In 1971, she became a student of the Academy of Music . In 1972, she won the Kodály singing competition, in the following years she won the Geneva , Ostend , Bratislava singing competitions, and then the Erkel singing competition in Budapest. Since 1976, she has been a singer at the Opera House and a permanent guest artist at the Vienna Staatsoper . She made her debut in 1977, playing the role of Mother at the premiere of Zsolt Durkó’s Mózes at the Opera House . She performed as a guest in many major cities and opera houses in Europe and America.

She was presented at the Metropolitan in New York in 1988. She sang the role of Nedda in Leoncavallo’s Bajazzos , then Micaela in Bizet ‘s Carmen . In 1989, she was the first in the world to sing the title role of Mascagni’s opera Iris , as a partner of Plácido Domingo , conducted by Giuseppe Patané . In 1992, one of her most memorable performances was the joint aria evening held with José Carreras at the Népstadion in Budapest . She has a close friendship with the Catalan artist, for the first time they performed together at the Staatsoper in Vienna, Halévy La Juive a concert-like performance of his opera, and then in the same place in Bohémé .

In 1994, together with the world-famous Spanish baritone Juan Pons , she gave a very successful concert at the Academy of Music, and then the two artists went on a concert tour around the world with their Verdi-duet evening. She has been a permanent member of the Hungarian State Opera House since 1996 . She considers Renata Scotto her role model as a singer .
