ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The score of Monteverdi’s Arianna has been lost: only the famous aria known as Arianna’s Lament remains , which is one of the central moments of the one-act opera and is performed in the sixth scene (according to the original libretto).
It is known that Monteverdi published the score only in 1623 in a version for soprano and basso continuo . A polyphonic version for five voices of the same piece was included in 1614 in the VI Libro de’ madrigali while a version for solo voice and basso continuo but with text in Latin is contained in the Pianto della Madonna of the collection Selva morale e spirituale of 1641.
The Lamento di Arianna is considered one of the highest results of the so-called declamato arioso elaborated by Monteverdi and continued to be the object of study even in the centuries following the composer’s death. It opens with the invocation Lasciatemi morire :
«Let me die, / let me die, / and what do you want, that will comfort me / in such a hard fate, / in such a great martyrdom? / Let me die.»
The musicologist Mario Giuseppe Genesi has created a reconstruction for two soloists, Arianna (soprano) and Dorilla (mezzo-soprano, five-voice choir and essential baroque basso continuo) which adds the recitatives and the choral part to the lament.
The subject of Monteverdi’s opera, treated in his own libretto by Vincenzo Cassani, was set to music over a century later by Benedetto Marcello in a version that bears the same title of Arianna .
The premiere took place in 1908 at the Philharmonie Berlin with harmonisation and orchestration by Ottorino Respighi and in 1995 at the Royal Opera House , Covent Garden in London with revision and libretto by Alexander Goehr with Susan Graham .
