ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Zinaida Gippius has an interesting short story “Fiction” (1906) with a somewhat mystical plot. But it was she who was chosen by the wonderful singer and teacher Margarita Hovsepyan to create the libretto for the future mono-opera.
“Nadezhda” – this is what composer Sofa Aznauryan and the author of the libretto and performer for whom this mono-opera was written, Margarita Hovsepyan, called their brainchild.
Gippius’s “Fiction” affirms the idea that a person who has lost the ability to change his fate through an effort of will forever loses hope for a better future. And along with the loss of hope, interest in life disappears. The mono-opera “Nadezhda” by S. Aznauryan-M. Hovsepyan, written on the basis of this novella, is a devastating monologue – a kind of confession of the desperate heroine of the opera – Countess Yvonne de Suzor – before an interlocutor invisible to the viewer – her beloved person, to whom she confides her terrible secret. She made an irreparable mistake – she lost her ignorance. Having learned from the soothsayer her Fate from the beginning to the very last moment and having lost hope of changing it, she now dreams of death as a deliverance.
The music of the mono-opera “Nadezhda” – bright in its mystery, sensitively responding to all the vicissitudes of the heroine’s mood, deserves the most serious attention of musicologists. Explaining her desire to work on a mono-opera with the composer S. Aznauryan, Margarita Hovsepyan said: “What attracts me to Sofa’s music is the serious understanding of what she writes about, the comprehension of the artistic text, the vivid disclosure of the literary image. And the result is an amazing synthesis of words and music. Penetrating into the essence of a literary work, Sofa Aznauryan, at the same time, knows how, as a composer, to preserve her individuality, her inherent harmonious language, and individual musical thinking. From year to year she improves her skills, carefully works on the musical and dramatic form, which is excellent for her. succeeds! That’s why S. Aznauryan’s works are always interesting and want to be performed.”
