ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

Gigantes y Cabezudos is a zarzuela in one act and three paintings, with a libretto by Miguel Echegaray y Eizaguirre and music by maestro Manuel Fernández Caballero. It premiered at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, with great success, on Tuesday, November 29, 1898. The scene begins in the Zaragoza market, where Pilar, a beautiful Aragonese woman, after arguing with one of the greengrocers and coming to To rescue her, the municipal sergeant confesses that her boyfriend, Jesús, who is in the Cuban War, has sent her a letter and she cannot read it because she does not know. The sagacious sergeant, who is also in love with the girl, invents the story that her boyfriend has gotten married in Cuba. “We Aragonese are Giants for our willpower and Big-headed for our stubbornness,” she sings.

On the other hand, her boyfriend returns from Cuba, accompanied by a group of fellow soldiers (Repatriated Chorus Scene) and talks to his friend the Sergeant, who tells him that Pilar has gotten married and Jesús, also very stubborn, affirms that, Despite everything, he will marry her.
Pilar, who does not quite believe what the sergeant had told her, meets him at the Pilar festivals and, to make sure that he has not lied to her, she asks him again to read her a letter – this time she does know the content-. The Sergeant, faithful to her deception, comes to tell her that Jesus will not return because he has died in the war. This lie angers Pilar, who tries to attack the municipal officer. He, upon seeing himself discovered, confesses the whole truth, and Pilar, understanding, forgives him. The climax of the work comes later when, at the exit of the procession, Pilar and Jesús meet again.
