ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

Freddie de Tommaso , born in1994, is an Anglo-Italian operatic tenor , noted in the lirico spinto roles of the Italian repertoire.

Biography
Freddie De Tommaso was born to an Italian father, who died when he was 18, and an English mother and grew up in Tunbridge Wells in Kent in the United Kingdom , in a music-loving environment. He attended opera houses very early, notably the Glyndebourne Festival and Covent Garden, where his parents took them. He sang in choirs as a child and took lessons but it was only “during the last two years of high school that I took singing lessons more seriously. I then started singing arias by Mozart and Rossini in the lyric baritone repertoire ,” he confided to the online magazine Forum Opéra , during an interview conducted in December 2021 1 .

The studies of French and Italian that he undertook did not convince him and he then decided to take singing lessons much more intensively.

He then joined the Royal Academy of Music in 2013 and received lessons from the man who is still his teacher, Mark Wildman, in the baritone range before realizing that the tenor range suited his voice better. He was thus able to pass all levels of the School, including the year of specialization in lyrical art.

In 2018 he won the competition as well as the Placido Domingo Tenor Prize and the Verdi Prize at the Francesc Viñas International Competition in Barcelona 2 . He then participated in the training program for young singers at the Salzburg festival and then at the Bayerische Staatsoper studio, which allowed him to appear on stage in a few small roles in the performances then given in Munich such as the hussar Vassili in Igor’s Mavra Stravinsky in 2019 3 .

In December 2019, he was cast in the secondary but important role of Cassio in Otello , on the main stage of the Royal Opera House , which reprises the production by Keith Warner, created in 2017 with the taking of the role of tenor Jonas Kaufmann . This time he is alongside tenor Gregory Kunde who sings the title role under the direction of Antonio Pappano 4 , 5 . He then sang in Nabucco in Amsterdam then Madame Butterfly in Dresden before having to take the long break due to COVID restrictions which were particularly difficult for young singers. Freddie De Tommaso was, however, able to perform at the Wiener Staatsoper, which remained open, in Madame Butterfly (Pinkerton), Nabucco , (Ismaele) 6 , Rosenkavalier (the Italian singer), Macbeth (Macduff) 7 .

But it was when Covid restrictions were lifted that he made a name for himself and a reputation in a few evenings in London. He was scheduled to play the role of Cavaradossi in the second cast of Tosca , at the Royal Opera House for the revival season. The cancellation due to vocal difficulties of tenor Bryan Hymel led him to replace him for the first performances, including the one that was broadcast livestreamed , in December 2021. His success quickly propelled him to the forefront of the stage despite his very young age 8 .

He then performed as Riccardo in the Masked Ball at the Verbier Festival in the summer of 2022 9 .

He recorded his first album for Decca, Passione, at the end of 2020 (released in 2021), composed of great Italian melody tunes 10 . This album was soon followed by two successive recordings, released in 2022 : Il tenore, where he explored the great arias of Tosca, Carmen, Turandot, Madame Butterfly 11 and the Neapolitan song Torna a Surriento , composed by Ernesto de Curtis .
