An opera composed by Domenico Freschi in 1680 – Libretto by Francesco Maria Piccioli – Created at Teatro delle Vergini in Villa Contarini.
The plot, which unfolds in Phoenicia, features two young lovers Ermelinda and Ormindo, a tyrannical father and two trouble makers. Ermelinda is not allowed to love Ormindo and will have to endure the stratagems and machinations fabricated by the other characters who want to split them. From mad scenes to fake deaths, every ruse and artifice will be used to make mischief. Will Ermelinda’s determination and cleverness outsmart her enemies?
Giovanni Domenico Freschi ( Bassano del Grappa , 26 March 1634 – Vicenza , 2 July 1710 ) was an Italian composer .
A few years after being ordained a priest, on 14 December 1656 he was appointed maestro di cappella at the Cathedral of Vicenza , a position he held throughout his life. Between 1657 and 1696 he was responsible for the music performed in the major churches of Vicenza during the holidays. He was also active as an opera performer at Venetian theaters and at Marco Contarini’s private theater in Piazzola sul Brenta. Freschi had as a pupil Giovanni Antonio Ricieri , the teacher of Giovanni Battista Martini .
