ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Under the leadership of the famous conductor Yu Long, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra presented the New York premiere of “Émigré” (Shanghai! Shanghai!). During Germany’s “Kristallnacht” in 1938, a catastrophe was imminent. A pair of brothers, Otto and Joseph, left Germany and went to the Italian port city of Trieste, where they boarded a ship bound for Shanghai in order to survive. Although the brothers were sad to leave their parents and hometown, they also tried to adapt to life in China. Doctor Joseph is interested in traditional Chinese medicine and visits a traditional Chinese medicine shop, where he meets Lina, the shop owner’s daughter, who has not yet gotten over the pain of her mother’s death in the Nanjing Massacre. They fall in love, but their cross-cultural love is scorned by their families… And so begins Émigré, a new semi-staged opera that depicts a story of love, loss and exile.
