ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
“The harvest is gone, the summer is gone, and no help has come to us”
laments the chorus at the beginning of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s oratorio.
Today is that work of frightening topicality and evokes current in our inner eye
Pictures up: the War in Ukraine, the blockade of grain shipments, the drought in East Africa, dead cattle, starving children, burning
Forests and the longing for peace and redemption.
The story of Elijah the prophet appears in several books of the Old Testament
told. He was from Tishbe in the East Bank, which was part of the Northern Kingdom of Israel,
and lived and worked around the 9th century BC. He announced the drought himself
– it is said to have lasted three and a half years. During this time Elias lives with a widow,
whose supplies never run out despite the drought. When her son dies, Elias raises him
to live.
