ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
El dúo de La africana is aone-act zarzuela , divided into three scenes, with music by Manuel Fernández Caballero and a libretto by Miguel Echegaray . It premiered with great success at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid, on May 13, 1893.
Argument
A humble opera company prepares to sing L’Africaine ( The African ) by Giacomo Meyerbeer . The dastardly businessman Querubini’s motto is to save as much as possible and not pay anyone.
The tenor, a young man from a good family who has run away from home, is madly in love with the soprano, Antonelli, “a graceful and rich Andalusian woman who spills salt” and Querubini’s wife. This flirtation arouses the jealousy of the businessman and his daughter, who melts for the young tenor.
Giuseppini, the tenor, takes advantage of the rehearsals to hug Antonelli, unleashing Querubini’s anger when he does so shamelessly in the middle of the performance, which is interrupted by the businessman who is about to burn with rage. Through the intervention of the authority everything returns to its normal state, but a second interruption, that of the young tenor’s mother, who has been looking for him throughout Spain, causes everything to fall apart.
