Don Juan is a musical written by Félix Gray in 2003. Don Juan was presented in Canada (mainly Quebec and Ottawa) and in France with a total of 600,000 viewers all over the world. The cast also went to South Korea. The soundtrack of the musical saw sales of more than 300,000 copies. The show had a run until 2006. The original cast was Jean-François Breau in the role of Don Juan and Marie-Ève Janvier in the role of Maria, as well as the 2012 revival.
✥ Story:
In a romantic, fantastical and timeless Seville, hearts beat, rage and break for Don Juan. A fiercely handsome young nobleman and unscrupulous libertine, Don Luis’s son unleashes passions: a cruel seducer and blasphemer, he stirs the desire of some and attracts the hatred of others. During a duel, he coldly murders the Commander, a man he has insulted. The murderer is now cursed. Now he is condemned to love, a love that will be his downfall. This new and sincere passion is born with Maria, an ingenuous sculptress promised to another man…
✥ Main characters:
Don Juan: a vain young nobleman and inveterate seducer. Cursed for the murder of the Commander, he discovers true love when he falls in love with Maria.
Maria: romantic and ingenuous, a talented sculptor. She is engaged to Raphaël. As a result, she too is cursed by Don Juan and condemned to love him.
Raphaël: an idealistic young soldier, he is engaged to Maria. He loves her sincerely. The discovery of Juan’s passion for Maria ignites his anger, which is quickly inflamed by Elvira. Their rivalry will end in tragedy.
Isabel: a fortune-teller and one-time conquest of Don Juan. Tolerant of Don Juan and naturally benevolent and altruistic, her premonitions always turn out to be right.
Elvira: a young girl dedicated to orders, she is seduced by Don Juan. Forced to marry her, he shows her neither affection nor interest. Despite her pleas, her husband remains unmoved by her distress. Her jealousy of Juan and Maria’s budding romance prompts her to reveal their affair to Raphael.
Don Luis: Don Juan’s father. Altruistic and honest, he tries to set his son straight. His love for his child leads him to forgive everything, including the indefensible.
Don Carlos: Don Juan’s friend, protector and spiritual guide, and his exact opposite. He loves, envies and disapproves of him all at once. But their sincere friendship is in vain, as Carlos cannot protect Juan from himself.
The Gypsy: an anonymous musician, he has lost his fiancée, who was also seduced by Don Juan.
