ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

“THEATRE DIRECTOR” is a “play for chance”, a comic opera composed at the request of the Austrian Emperor Joseph II. At the premiere, it was performed on the same evening as A. Salieri’s play “First the Music, Then the Word.”

“The phenomenon of theater is essentially no different from any institution or company in life. Both there and in the theater, everything is built on the principle of subordination… But the success of any theater group fully depends on how this “subordination” is embodied. If the director assembles a theater troupe like an expensive collection, if he values each employee, and the theater worker, feeling this attitude towards himself, is ready to selflessly serve the profession, such a theater is guaranteed success. For the sake of the existence of such theaters, I wanted to stage this performance. Maybe we will see ourselves here, as in a mirror. Even if in the genre of singspiel*…” Mikhail Lyakhov, director of the play

*Singspiel (literally from German – “play with singing”) is a musical and dramatic genre common in Germany and Austria in the 2nd half of the 18th – early 19th centuries; a play with musical numbers or an opera with spoken dialogue instead of recitatives. Singspiel absorbed the traditions of Italian, French, and English comic opera. “THEATRE DIRECTOR” is performed in Russian.

What are artists willing to do for a chance to become a stage star? What is real theater – a way to make money or selfless service to art? We invite the viewer to see what choice awaits our heroes.
