ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

Olivier Messiaen “O sacrum convivium!” Motet for choir a cappella

Gabriel Fauré Requiem, version of 1893 for soprano, baritone, choir, chamber orchestra and organ, op. 48

French music has always been characterized by its singability – a good reason for the artistic director of the BR Choir, Peter Dijkstra, to present works by four French composers from two generations. The Munich Radio Orchestra will be there, as well as Anna El-Khashem (soprano), Johannes Kammler (baritone) and Max Hanft on the organ.

In addition to a prize-winning competition composition by the young Gabriel Fauré, you can also hear his Opus 48, which is part of the canon of great Requiem settings. Maurice Duruflé’s Mass “cum jubilo” takes us into the sound spheres of Gregorian chant, while “O sacrum convivium!” by his student Olivier Messiaen surprises with contemporary tones. The French song repertoire is rounded off by music by the enfant terrible, Francis Poulenc, who came to faith late in life. His a cappella mass impresses with a variety of styles that has made its creator widely known.
