La Cantata criolla (Florentino the one who sang with El Diablo) or simply Cantata criolla is a musical piece composed by the Venezuelan musician Antonio Estévez , premiered on July 25, 1954, in the city of Caracas , whose popularity and quality have made it Iconic piece of Venezuelan musical nationalism, the lyrics are born from the mythical Venezuelan poem “Florentino the one who sang with the Devil” written by Alberto Arvelo Torrealba , which narrates a singing or counterpoint competition between Florentino and the Devil. The variety, the intensity, the way each instrument enters, the way the singers perform, the way the choirs perform throughout the work, make it one of the best Latin American classical works. The Cantata Criolla has been performed for years in the most demanding stages in the world, being performed by the most important orchestras worldwide, also being incorporated in many cases, with the accompaniment of dance companies. The dissemination of this work allowed the plains culture to reach all parts of the world, transmitting the deepest of its essence.
