ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
To the sounds of Saint-Saëns’ “Samson and Dalila,” the stagehands rise up from the stage basement on a large lift to then begin their work on the boards that mean the world. The men work in shifts on the stage of the Vienna State Opera from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., sometimes with a loud rumble in the otherwise empty house and then again with whisper quiet so as not to disturb rehearsals or performances. You are part of the operations of one of the largest opera houses in the world.
According to its title, Stephanus Domanig’s film BACKSTAGE WIENER STAATSOPER looks behind the scenes of this cultural industry and outlines the diverse but largely invisible working world that enables the world-famous singers, conductors and musicians to inspire their audiences. The focus is on those employees behind, next to, above and below the stage who look after and operate the huge and complex operation. And there are an impressive number of them. They provide an insight into their work and give the cinema audience an idea of what is necessary for the productions to run smoothly and successfully
