When Johann Sebastian Bach took over the office of Thomaskantor in the spring of 1723, this was the beginning of a success story that produced not only the cantatas but also a number of world-famous compositions. The city of Leipzig takes this as an opportunity to celebrate “their” composer. A highlight is the open-air concert at the Leipzig market square, where world stars such as Lang Lang and Sophie Kauer perform.
What would the history of music have been like if Bach hadn’t taken over the Leipzig Thomaskantorate? He would probably never have written down milestones in music history such as the Matthew Passion, the Mass in B minor, the Christmas Oratorio, the Air or the Goldberg Variations. Inconceivably! Reason enough to say thank you in a big gala on June 9th, 2023 – at a historic location: on the BachStage at Leipziger Markt, right next to the old town hall, where Bach signed his employment contract 300 years ago.

In a colorful program with popular pieces by J.S. Bach, in addition to the Thomanerchor and the Gewandhaus Orchestra conducted by Andreas Reize, the following will also be present: world star Lang Lang with his favorite variations from the Goldberg Variations, cellist and film star Sophie Kauer with excerpts from the famous G major suite for solo cello, Albrecht Mayer on the oboe, as well as – for friends of beautiful voices – the soprano Francesca Aspromonte and the countertenor Cameron Shabazi.
